Why Squarespace? Is It a Good Website Platform for Small Businesses?

If you’re choosing a website platform for your small business, Squarespace is likely to be one of the names you come across.

It’s known for polished design and an all-in-one setup, but that doesn’t automatically mean it’s the right choice for every business.

I use Squarespace for most of my new website builds because it offers a good balance of professional design, ease of management and practical functionality for small businesses.

That said, there are situations where another platform may be a better fit.

Here’s a practical look at where Squarespace works well, what its limitations are, and how it compares with platforms such as Wix, WordPress and Shopify.

What Is Squarespace?

Squarespace is an all-in-one website platform that includes website hosting, design tools, blogging, e-commerce, forms, analytics and other business features within the same system.

For small business owners, one of its biggest advantages is that you don’t generally need to manage separate hosting, software updates or plugins just to keep the website running.

The platform is designed to make day-to-day website management relatively straightforward once the site has been set up properly.

Is Squarespace Good for Small Businesses?

For many small businesses, yes.

Squarespace can be a particularly good fit for:

  • service-based businesses

  • consultants and professionals

  • creatives and artists

  • photographers

  • small online stores

  • community organisations

  • sole traders

  • businesses that want a professional website they can manage themselves

It works especially well when the goal is to create a polished website without building a highly complex custom system.

Why I Use Squarespace

It’s Easy for Business Owners to Manage

One of the main reasons I use Squarespace is that clients can usually manage the everyday parts of their website themselves after launch.

Updating text, changing an image, adding a blog post or making small content changes doesn’t necessarily require ongoing developer support.

That can be particularly useful for small business owners who want control over their website without needing to learn a highly technical system.

It Can Look Professional

Squarespace has a strong design framework, but a good Squarespace website is about more than choosing a template.

The layout, spacing, typography, imagery, page structure and user experience still need to be considered carefully.

When those elements are designed well, Squarespace can support a very polished and professional result.

It Works Across Different Screen Sizes

Squarespace websites are built to adapt across desktop, tablet and mobile devices.

That doesn’t mean mobile design should be ignored, but it provides a strong foundation for creating a consistent experience across different screen sizes.

It Includes Useful SEO Tools

Squarespace includes built-in tools for things such as:

  • SEO page titles and descriptions

  • custom page URLs

  • image alt text

  • heading structure

  • mobile-friendly design

  • automatic XML sitemaps

  • SSL security

  • social sharing settings

These tools make it possible to build a strong SEO foundation without relying heavily on third-party plugins.

Is Squarespace Good for Google SEO?

Yes, Squarespace can perform well in Google search results.

The platform itself is not usually the deciding factor.

SEO also depends on things such as:

  • the quality and relevance of your content

  • your page structure

  • your headings

  • your website speed and usability

  • internal links

  • your business location and competition

  • backlinks and authority

  • how well your pages answer what people are searching for

A poorly structured Squarespace website can struggle in search results, just as a poorly structured WordPress or Wix website can.

The platform provides the tools, but those tools still need to be used properly.

Is Squarespace Good for E-Commerce?

Squarespace can work very well for small to medium-sized online stores.

It includes tools for:

  • physical and digital products

  • inventory management

  • discount codes

  • online payments

  • shipping and pickup options

  • product categories

  • order management

  • customer emails

  • basic sales reporting

For artists, makers, small retailers and product-based businesses with a manageable catalogue, it can offer a relatively simple way to run both the website and online store in one place.

For very large stores or businesses with highly complex inventory, shipping, integrations or retail requirements, Shopify may be a better fit.

Squarespace vs Wix

Squarespace and Wix can both work well for small businesses.

Wix offers a lot of flexibility and a broad range of built-in business tools.

Squarespace tends to appeal to businesses that want a more structured design system and a relatively simple editing experience.

If you already have a Wix website that works well for your business, there may be no reason to rebuild it simply for the sake of moving platforms.

In some cases, refining an existing website can make more sense than starting again.

Squarespace vs WordPress

WordPress offers enormous flexibility and can be a good choice for websites that require extensive custom functionality.

However, depending on how the site is built, it may also involve managing hosting, themes, plugins, updates and security.

Squarespace brings more of those elements into one managed platform.

For a small business that wants a professional website without needing to manage a more technical website setup, that simplicity can be a major advantage.

Squarespace vs Shopify

Shopify is built specifically around e-commerce and is often the stronger choice for larger or more complex online stores.

Squarespace is often a good fit when e-commerce is one part of a broader business website.

For example, an artist, consultant or small retailer may want a strong content-led website alongside a relatively simple online store.

A business with hundreds or thousands of products, complex inventory systems or advanced e-commerce requirements may benefit more from Shopify.

What Are the Downsides of Squarespace?

No platform is perfect.

Some limitations of Squarespace include:

  • less flexibility for highly custom functionality

  • fewer third-party extensions than some platforms

  • limited options for very complex e-commerce setups

  • some advanced customisation may require code

  • moving a large or complex site to another platform later can take work

For most small business websites, these limitations may not be an issue.

For a highly specialised project, they can be important.

Do You Own Your Squarespace Website?

You own the content you upload to your website, including your text, images and branding.

Squarespace provides the software and hosting platform that your website runs on.

You pay Squarespace directly for the website subscription, similar to paying for hosting and website software together.

Your domain can also remain registered separately if you prefer.

Can You Build a Squarespace Website Yourself?

Yes.

Squarespace is designed to make DIY website building possible.

For a new business with a small budget, building your own website can be a completely reasonable place to start.

The challenge is often not learning how to place text and images on a page.

It’s working out:

  • what pages you actually need

  • how to structure the information

  • what should appear first

  • how to guide visitors through the site

  • how the website should work on mobile

  • what makes the site look professional

  • how to set up SEO properly

  • how to turn visitors into enquiries or customers

That’s where professional website design can make a difference.

Who Is Squarespace Best Suited To?

Squarespace is particularly well suited to small businesses that want:

  • a professional-looking website

  • an easy-to-manage platform

  • a relatively simple ongoing setup

  • built-in blogging or e-commerce

  • fewer technical maintenance tasks

  • the ability to make everyday updates themselves

It may not be the best choice for businesses needing highly customised systems, very large online stores or advanced integrations.

Is Squarespace the Best Website Platform?

There isn’t one website platform that is best for every business.

The right platform depends on what your website needs to do, how complex the business is, how you want to manage it and how the website may grow in the future.

For many small businesses, Squarespace offers a strong balance between design, functionality and ease of management.

That’s why it’s the platform I specialise in for new website builds.
